World's Largest Debacle-ASA
Richmond, VA

May 27, 2000

South Boston Golden Corral Softball, regrettably, traveled to Richmond last weekend for the World's Largest Round Robin.  It was a disaster from the start as GC failed to win at least 2 games for the first time this season (in fact, the team didn't even win one!).  For a team that has averaged nearly 5 wins per weekend this year, it was quite a let down.  In the previous 8 tournaments, The Corral has posted 3 first, 2 second, 1 third, and 1 fourth place finish.   Now, for the bad news...
Golden Corral opened the tourney with an opponent that they had just beaten two weeks earlier in taking the NSA Dixie-Dudley.  Spirit Graphics/Hooters was ready this time, and GC was not.  A big first inning would have been plenty as GC had little to offer in this one and went quietly, 9-24.
Next up for GC was SwizzleStix from CT.  Again, GC gave up a big first inning with less than stellar defense and suspect hitting.  Not what you should expect from this Golden Corral team.  GC gave what they had on this day, but fell short again by the score of 12-16.
In the next one, GC was matched against Candyland Express from PA.   This one went back and forth all game, but after a mishap or two, Candyland ended it in the bottom of the sixth (all games were only 6 innings in this tournament) with a grand slam, 16-15.  That was just the way things seemed to go on this day.
As the rain continued to pour and showed no signs of slowing down, Golden Corral, who was very short on players on this day as it was, decided to pack it in and wait until better conditions.  The team will regroup with its full squad (hopefully) and head to the third, and final, round of the NSA Dixie-Dudley in Petersburg.

Team Leaders:  Matt Hunt (.727, 3 HRs),  John Hudson (.636).
