April 1, 2000
South Boston Golden Corral Softball traveled to Burlington, NC for a one-day double elimination NSA event.   Golden Corral opened the tournament against Hick's/Prudential.  Hick's jumped on top in the top of the first with 5 quick runs, but GC answered with 4 of their own on a Curtis Duffer grand slam.  Hick's scored 4 more in the second and 2 in the third to stretch the lead to 11-4 entering the bottom of the third.  Consecutive singles from Kirk Barnes, JoJo Owens, John Hudson, Matt Hunt, a double from Kevin Neal, and a big homerun from Tuffy Eggleston tied the game at eleven.  Hick's, then, exploded for 9 big runs in the top of the fourth, and GC, again, had to play catch-up.  As Golden Corral just tried to keep it close, Hick's continued to score in every inning except the all-important top of the seventh.  When the inning ended on a fine double play, GC had their shot to win it the last of the seventh.  Owens calmly singled to start the inning, and when Hudson drew a walk, Hunt came to the plate with the Corral trailing by 2.   He delivered the game-winning blast to end the game, with a Golden Corral victory, 24-23.
In the next game, GC faced Carpets by Thad.   This was a dreadful game for Golden Corral, as it was marred by very poor defense, and little offense.  Duffer homered twice with a 3 for 3 effort, and Owens, Neal (HR), Rodney Mosley, Eddie Poole, and Kirk Barnes all chipped in 2 hits apiece, but GC dropped this one by a 22-11 count.
Next up for Golden Corral was Elite Softball.  GC jumped on them in the first inning, as eleven batters went to the plate for a 6-run output.  When Elite failed to answer, Golden Corral put 4 more on the board in the second, and rolled with 7 runs in the third behind consecutive hits from Poole, Tony Conner, Lee Womack, Kevin Henderson, and Barnes.   GC never looked back in this one, as they won it easily by run-rule, 21-8.
Golden Corral, then, seemed to repeat this mornings process of playing one good game, and then one bad one.  Against Homescape, GC could not get anything going at all, and the defense, again, let them down.  While The Corral had many chances to put this team away, they did not.  A few runs here and a couple more there did not get the job done, and Homescape hung around until they started hitting the ball themselves.  They came up with 6 runs in the sixth inning on two very costly errors, and GC let this one get away by the pitiful score of 11-9.

Team leaders for the weekend:  Kirk Barnes (.833),  Eddie Poole (.769),  Curtis Duffer (.714, 3 HRs).
