August 21, 1999:  Barksdale Ins./South Boston Softball has called it a year after we failed to have enough players to attend the Virginia State Championship, the tournament that we won just last season.   The team will resume play in September after the regionals.  Stay tuned for roster and schedule changes.

August 9, 1999:  Barksdale Ins./South Boston Merchants softball would like to thank Daniel Davis and Tony Conner for traveling with the team to Charlotte, NC for the NSA State Tournament.  Without their participation, the team would not have had enough players to go.

July 1, 1999:  Ty Mason has joined Barksdale Ins./South Boston Merchants softball team.  He played with SoBo for the first time at the Salem Fair Tournament in Salem, VA on July 4th weekend.

June 9, 1999:  Matt Scott has joined Barksdale Ins./South Boston Merchants softball team.  He played on Sunday with the team in Allensville, NC, and will continue to play with the team for the remainder of the 1999 season.

June 5, 1999:  Matt Wallace has been nursing a sore shoulder for the last three weeks and has been unable to play in weekend tournaments.  He will play in the upcoming NSA Eastern State Championship on the 19th.

May 29, 1999:  W.J. Long has retired due to various aches and pains and to concentrate on winning golf long-drive championships.  He recently won a Re-Max district qualifier in Winston Salem, NC.  His drive of 357 yds and 18 inches qualified him for the regional finals to be held in Charlotte, NC in September. If he finishes in the top 2 spots he will advance to the finals in Mesquite, NV, which is aired on ESPN.

May 15,1999:  Mark Dalton has joined Barksdale Ins./South Boston Merchants softball team.

May 3, 1999:  Late News:  Cordell Jackson is no longer a member of Barksdale Ins./South Boston Merchants Softball, effective immediately.

Rule Change for 1999:   This year (1999) in VA USSSA, the defense will be allowed to use 11 defensive players in the field if they so choose.  This "extra" defender has already "robbed" several would-be base hits and will certainly continue to do so as the season progresses.  Keep that in mind when viewing the Stats page.  heheh ;)

A team would have to be crazy not to take advantage of this new rule, but I have actually heard that some teams still play with only 10 players on defense.  Go figure.  :)
