Batterschoice.com USSSA NIT
Danville, VA
July 3-4, 2004

After a long layoff, Golden Corral entered the Batterschoice.com USSSA NIT in Danville over the July the 4th weekend.  In the first game, GC faced DWA/Easton from Roanoke, who was the USSSA points leader in the state of Virginia.  A tough draw for both teams, but GC had not accumulated many U-Trip points thus far and came in a low seed.  Each team came out hitting the ball, which made the score 8-5 GC after one inning.  The Corral continued to hit the ball pretty well, and when the defense settled in, GC pulled away for a 21-12 win.  Next up, Golden Corral met the newly formed Dalton Farms team comprised of some veteran players from the old Dalton Farms team and some young talent from Top Notch Softball.  The Corral rolled to a quick 14-1 lead, and Dalton Farms never got in this game, as GC won it 18-2 in 5 innings.  This put GC into the undefeated game against ACME/Evertan/IHOP.  After a slow start, GC cranked it up and pulled away for a 24-9, six-inning win.  Golden Corral now was sitting back as DWA/Easton, Norm’s Transmissions, New Zestland, American Fitness, ACME/Evertan/IHOP, and Dalton Farms battled to see who would challenge GC for the championship.  DWA/Easton fought hard all day and managed to get back through the loser’s bracket.  This game went back and forth, until DWA/Easton pulled away from Golden Corral in the late innings.  GC mounted a seventh inning rally but fell short for a disappointing 21-24 loss.  This forced the “if necessary” game.  The final game was all GC for a while, as the team built a 17-2 lead, but DWA/Easton showed that they will not give up and batted back to within 5 runs in the fourth inning.  Golden Corral shut them down after that, however, and scored the runs they needed to run-rule DWA/Easton by a 27-12 final score in six hard fought, and sometimes heated, innings.    ;-)
