You know, what I think this country was founded on was LOTS of differing opinions. There were the very wealthy landowners/farmers/lawyers who saw a chance to become extremely wealthy without having to support the king anymore. And there were some really cool freedom fighters around who came because they didn't want the government harassing them over how or who to worship. And there were communities and families who came over from Ireland, Scotland, Italy, Germany, Russia, and France. They're still found in pockets like Little Italy, the Shenandoah Valley, Miami, and South Boston (in Massachusetts, not VA). The pioneers on the open frontier were cool. But so were the folks who built the cities, where civilization took root. We've had some excellent presidents to guide us: Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt, and Dwight Eisenhower.
And we have a GREAT country here. We ARE free. But, freedom has a costly price. It takes MONEY to have nice roads and highways, the #1 defense system in the world, and schools to teach children how to practice DEMOCRACY. I'm willing to pay the price. I just wish the rich were, too. I just read on Democrats.com that Alcoa made $399 million and paid no taxes last year. Check it out. If you and I are paying 50%, then where's the justice?
