I think the only flaw is your inability to see past your republican ideology. The point of the article is that corporate influence is SO pervasive today that its reach extends far past the supply element in the equation and into the demand element. And I'm quite sure that Bill Gates (and ANY past or present corporate officers) are going nowhere, even if their latest venture fails. They are, after all, millionaires and billionaires. They have the control.
