Are you surprised that a mean old "Repuglican" (that's a good one. Ha!)such as myself can be caring, kind, patient, nurturing, sensitive, etc? Well, of course! We're just folks like everyone else! We put our pants on one leg at a time, we have morning breath, we bleed when cut.
It's just that we don't believe it's the government's role to be kind because that means being selective as to who is "worthy" of the kindness (and all the social ills that generate from that) and it also means, since the government has no money of its own, that money must be confiscated from one person to give to another. That's not fair and it's not what this country is based upon. That's Socialism.
As for myself, I am a member of several civic groups which raises lots of money for worthwhile causes, I go to church regularly and tithe, I participate in other events whenever I can (I LOVE to help build houses for Habitat for Humanity!). I give to charities. I would love to give even MORE if the government allowed me to keep more of my own money to do so. {sigh}
