I'd like to add one observation, if I may. That is, it isn't ALWAYS status and greed that makes both parents work.
Generally speaking, it literally takes one parent's paycheck to support the family and the other parent's paycheck to support the government. On average, close to 50% is taken from the average person's gross income (that includes Federal, state, social security, and all those other things).
I honestly believe in my heart of hearts if the government took only, say, 3% (like was true prior to LBJ's Great Socieity's "War of Poverty") you'd see a dramatic decline in families where two parents worked.
